As old cables degrade, lead can leach into the soil at high levels, the report found. A 2021 pediatric study found that half the kids in the US have high levels of lead in their blood. According to the EPA, the safety standard for lead levels in the soil where children play is 400 parts per million. The Journal's investigation found that more than 100 schools have lead cables running overhead, and more than 1,000 schools and childcare centers are within half a mile of underwater lead cables. "We have not seen, nor have regulators identified, evidence that legacy lead-sheathed telecom cables are a leading cause of lead exposure or the cause of a public health issue."

BUENOS AIRES, April 7 (Reuters) - Argentina's state oil company YPF has agreed to pay nearly $300 million to the creditors of one of its now-bankrupt subsidiaries after they sued the company in relation to a historical U.S. environmental case, it said. In 2016, Maxus Energy Corporation filed for chapter 11 protection in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Delaware. YPF said its former subsidiary had met its obligations until then, without specifying if these were financial or environmental. Under the conciliation agreement reached this week, the Maxus Liquidation Trust agreed to drop the claims it had filed against both YPF and co-defendant Spanish oil company Repsol, the statement issued by YPF said. In turn, YPF and Repsol agreed to pay the trust $287.5 million each, without admitting any responsibility.
A video of a Goodyear blimp flying over New Jersey in 2020 is being shared online as if it is recent footage of a UFO. A tweet sharing the video said: “UFO BREAKING: REAL ALIEN SPACECRAFT CAPTURED ON HIGHWAY” (here). CBS 8 San Diego aired a closer view of the Goodyear blimp at the time, acknowledging that residents confused the blimp for a UFO (here). In 2018, an alleged UFO sighting turned out to be a Goodyear blimp covering a NASCAR race, according to news reports at the time (here) and (here). The object in the video is a Goodyear blimp in New Jersey in 2020, not a recent UFO sighting.
Opening arguments kicked off Monday in the federal trial of Sayfullo Saipov, the Uzbek immigrant who in 2017 plowed a rented pickup truck on a New York City bike path, killing eight people in its path of destruction. The Oct. 31 attack was the deadliest terrorist attack in New York City since Sept. 11, 2001. Police said Saipov, then 29, was inspired by the Islamic State terrorist group, or ISIS, in launching the attack. How the attack unfoldedIn the attack, Saipov rented a white Home Depot pickup truck in Passaic, New Jersey, and drove it into Manhattan where the streets were filling up with Halloween festivities. Investigators later found a note that Saipov left in the truck, claiming the attack was in the name of ISIS.
